Norm Mahalich is the "Founding Father" and 1st President of Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley. Norm served as a Huey Helicopter Pilot, and C-130 Fixed Wing Pilot. Norm is responsible for starting and the success of Many San Ramon Valley Veterans Programs and Events. Thanks Norm, We Salute You Brother!

Norm Mahalich was born May 6, 1942 in Los Angeles into a Navy Family . They moved to Kodiak, Alaska in 1947, to San Diego in 1950, to Honolulu in 1952, then moved back to Los Angeles in 1954. Norm attended public schools in Eagle Rock and graduated from Glendale High School in 1959. He then attended and graduated from Glendale Jr. College. In June 1961 Norm Mahalich joined the United States Marine Corps. He went on active duty as a Marine Aviation Cadet ( This is where Norm gets the handle of MARCAD ) and trained in the T-34 at Naval Air Station Saufley Field, NAS Barin Fields and on the USS Lexington.
He then took Helicopter training at NAS Ellyson Field, where He received His Commission & Naval Aviator wings on Nov. 8, 1963. Norm reported to VMO-6 at Camp Pendleton, CA and transitioned into the Kaman OH-43D helo (syncropter) and Cessna O-1C. In mid 1964 He received a brand new BELL UH-1E helicopter, then started a 13 month overseas tour on Okinawa 1 April 1965. Then Norm boarded the USS Iwo Jima and arrived in Da Nang, Viet Nam in mid-April 1965 Where He Flew more than 425 combat Helicopter Gunship & Medevac missions. Some missions ventured into Laos. He then rotated to CONUS   in May 1966 and was an Instructor pilot at Cap Pendleton until October when He transferred to Marine Corps Air Station,  El Toro for transition into the KC-130F. Norm then spent all of 1967 & most of 1968 flying back & forth to South East Asia with numerous 4-day detachments in South Vietnam flying combat missions, Aerial refueling, Med-Evac, Paradrops and Re-supply Missions. Norm Resigned his commission in Sept 1968. Norm then went to work for Trans World Airlines in Kansas City,  Missouri where He met His wonderful wife Lili, and they Married in November 1975. Lily was working at TWA as a Stewardess. At TWA Norm flew the Convair CV-880 on and off until He retired in 1987. In 1971 Norm obtained his R.E. License and Sold Real Estate on the San Francisco Peninsula and San Ramon Valley. He also was also a flight instructor at Sierra Academy in Oakland. Norm & Lily have a son Chad who was born Oct 1981. Norm Joined Better Homes Realty in June 1987 after his retirement from TWA.  Norm & Lily moved to Diablo Country Club in 1976 from San Carlos.  Norm Joined the VFW Post 75 in 1989.  He is also a member of the USMC VietNam Helicopter Pilots Association and The Marine Corps League.
In Feb1991 Norm Founded the VietNam Veterans of Diablo Valley.  Norm and Lily have retired and moved to Placerville CA.
